For Ages 14+
Gripping YA thriller from debut Australian author Sarah Epstein
We don’t pick and choose what to be afraid of. Our fears pick us.

In this nightmare the one thing that is real is fear
Tash Carmody has been traumatised since childhood, when she witnessed her gruesome imaginary friend Sparrow lure young Mallory Fisher away from a carnival. At the time nobody believed Tash, and she has since come to accept that Sparrow wasn’t real. Now fifteen and mute, Mallory’s never spoken about the week she went missing.
As disturbing memories resurface, Tash starts to see Sparrow again. And she realises Mallory is the key to unlocking the truth about a dark secret connecting them. Does Sparrow exist after all? Or is Tash more dangerous to others than she thinks?

MY REVIEW

We don’t pick and choose what to be afraid of. I like that quote in the blurb. When I was a little girl I got locked in 2 toilets, with each time the door had to be taken of its hinges to get me out. I have suffered from claustrophobia ever since childhood. I now can’t lock toilet doors, or use lifts.
Small Spaces is 14 years olds + but I recommend this thriller to adults too.
Tash Carmody, traumatised since childhood after her friend went missing at a carnival. Tash is sent to a child and adolescent psychiatrist because Tash sees someone come to her at night time, the shadow only appears when it’s dark. Natasha has named the shadow Sparrow. The doctor says that Sparrow is a fabrication and that Tash has created him because she is a lonely girl craving attention. As this thriller progressed I learned who Sparrow really was. The fear and ending took me by Surprise.
