MY REVIEW
I’m a big fan of Angie Thomas books I have read The Hate U Give and I’m On The Come Up, so when I found out author Angie Thomas had another book out Concrete Rose, I just had to read it.
Concrete Rose is a searing exploration of black manhood set seventeen years before the events of The Hate U Give.
What I like about Angie Thomas is how she writes the speech for each character.
I did really feel sorry for seventeen-year-old Maverick as he gets mixed up with drugs and a baby, it’s a lot for a boy being so young to get mixed up into with drugs and having a baby brought into his life, that he will have to support for the rest of his life.
Maverick’s dad is in prison and he always tells his Ma that he’s going to take care of her as his Ma has two jobs she works in a hotel during the day and cleans offices by night, just to earn enough money to feed them, put clothes on their backs and to pay the bills, and Maverick wants to help his Ma, brining in some money.
Maverick’s Ma for weeks has been saying to him take care of your son, but he’s convinced that he’s not the daddy. His Ma tries to explain to him just by being with a girl for one time only, that’s all it takes. Maverick knows that a DNA test is being submitted on the girl’s baby to find out who is the daddy, it could be Mavericks or another boys.
I couldn’t put this book down with something to look forward to on every page.
I totally recommend reading Concrete Rose to fans of Angie Thomas, and for readers that have never read any books by the author. There are quite a lot of topics that book clubs could have a good discussion.
