As she sat in her bed reading from a book, seven-year -old Elise Rose was unaware that her childhood would be over by morning. She was too young to know that violent hands played cruel tricks or that innocence held little fight against cheap beer and cigarette butts. After the trauma of childhood, Elise, now twenty years old, walks the streets in need of escape. The town around her has become stained and the ghost of a loved one will not let her rest. So, when she stumbles across an isolated house at the end of Darcy Lane, she believes that she has found the thing that she needs more than any other. The house is away from town, surrounded by green fields and absent of the memories that she would rather forget. The house is bright in the morning sun and soon becomes lodged in her imagination. So, the question is set. How far is she willing to go in search of absolution?

MY REVIEW

Wow,! What a brilliant story teller. Author James Graham is gifted at bringing smells, fear, and feelings throughout the chapters. This is a lovely short novel that’s perfect for readers that don’t like long books to read, and would be a great choice for teenagers and adults.

I personally found it hard to believe that Darcy Lane is his first novel, I certainly recommend Darcy Lane with its short story of 130 pages, packed with a mixture of scenes, and perfect for readers clubs book as a discussion point.

Elise Rose is the main character who lives in a flat with her mother, she curls up in bed and read to be out of her mother’s way when she brings friends round. When her mother goes out she often came back with a friend, until one of her mother’s friend got so drunk and violent, he started shouting about Elise Rose.

This story tackles frightening violence that created by a man being very drunk and what damage he caused, and the trauma of discomfort and Elise’s deep unsettling emotions that she had encountered.

How will she able to shake off these kind of messy memories? Readers are taken through young Elsie’s life and thirteen years later, when she leaves a rehabilitation centre.

Trust me this is such a really brilliant story it gets better and better within every chapter. I do hope author James Graham writes another book soon as I would thrilled to read it.
