He didn’t know the missing woman, but he knew her face. Her name was Clare Buchanan. She’d been gone more than eleven years.
In the past few weeks he’d began to feel responsible for her. For her memory.
When he wasn’t required at his job driving-holidaymakers around on jet skis out on the lake, he would choose to retreat to the cabana. Inside, the wrought-iron bed was about ten inches too short for his six-foot frame. Sometimes he would jolt awake, sick to his stomach and drenched in sweat, dreams still plagued by the events in Uruguay and Argentina. When Tom Holt wasn’t thinking about Clare Buchanan, he thought about his friend Anil Choudhury, slumped to the floor in a pool of blood, a bullet in his skull. The cabana considered of three small rooms, built on thick struts into the rugged landscape, which led down to the volcanic sand beaches on the banks of Lake Caburgua. The lake was nestled in the mountains, twenty minutes drive from the adventure town of Pucon, in the shadow of a volcano known as Villarrica. There were no carpets ; instead crumbling wooded floorboards, libel to invasion by wasps and a hoard of ants. It wasn’t light inside, the sunlight only filtered through the windows for a couple of hours in the early afternoon. A light bulb hung from fraying wire on the ceiling in each room. As living spaces went, it was decent enough. It was a place he could hide, for now.
