Winter People Three days. Three Strangers. One question.

The wild Atlantic coast of Ireland. Three strangers. One question: who are we without the people who love us?

Sis Cotter has lived her whole life in a small house by her beloved beach. Here, she grew up, reared her family, and buried her husband. Now her children are far away and, in three days, her house will be taken from her.

Next door, Lydia has withdrawn from her husband, her friends, her life. She watches the sea as her own private penance for a wrong she can never put right.

Peter’s best friend is dying, and his long-time foster mother is slowly forgetting who he is. Adrift without his two anchors, and struggling with the ethics of displacing people for a living, he looks for something to remind him of who he is and who he wants to be.

Winter People is a story of forgiveness, resilience, and the power of the sea to unlock what we are most afraid to say.

MY REVIEW

Winter People is about three days. Three strangers. One question.

I felt really sorry for Sis whose husband had died.

This story shows when in some cases when someone dies what complications are involved.

Sis is all alone at home now, with her only companion is her dog Laddy. Her children are all grown up with lives if their own. Most Dogs can sense when an owner isn’t there anymore. I must admit this brought tears to my eyes. After Frank died, Laddy started to miss Franks rough hands stroking him. Sis receives a phone call from her solicitor, as she was really worried to see if the house could still be saved. I’m glad I have a box of tissues by my desk as Sis experienced very upsetting times, that brought tears to my eyes.

Lydia seems to type things and keeps pressing Delete, Delete, Delete. Lydia didn’t seem to have much to do apart from looking out from her window, watching her neighbour Sis Cotter walk down the road until she disappeared out of view.

More tears 🥲 more tissues.

Peter has to go and see Fintan. Sit with him. Hold his hand. How had it come to this so quickly? It was a bare handful of weeks since Fintan had rang Peter. And now Fintan has been moved to a hospice.

I have read Grainne Murphy’s other two novels The Ghostlights
