The Only Suspect By Louise Candlish
Hardback published by Simon and Schuster 2nd February 2023
Alex lives a comfortable life with his wife Beth in the leafy suburb of Silver Vale. Fine, so he’s not the most extrovert guy on the street he prefers to keep himself to himself but he’s a good husband and an easy going neighbour.
That’s until Beth announces the creation of a nature trail on a local site that’s been disused for decades, and suddenly Alex is a changed man. Now he’s always watching. Questioning. Struggling to hide his dread.
As the landscapers get to work, a secret threatens to surface from years ago. Back in Alex’s twenties when he got entangled with a seductive young woman called Marina, who threw both their lives into turmoil.
And who sparked a police hunt for a murder suspect that was never quite what it seemed.
IT STILL ISN’T
MY REVIEW
I have read a few books by Louise Candlish, with The Only Suspect, being my favourite as the plot all comes together nicely or rather not so nicely!
I instantly know when characters set within a plot, gets right under my skin, that the book is going to be top class dam good, and this is exactly what The Only Suspect, is it’s dam good and not to be missed by any readers that likes a mystery thriller.
The thing I have found by reading The Only Suspect by Louise Candlish is that she has added so many twists for all the characters involved that’s it’s literally impossible for anyone to guess the outcome.
The chapter are interwoven with Alex in the present day and Rick who is in chapters that are set in the past.
I don’t personally live in a place like the Silver Vale, that’s set within the storyline in London, where there are big pash gated mansions. I live in a town in small two bedroom house.
In Silver Vale, to me Alex’s is hiding something, he seems to be worried about the new nature trail that’s going to open, coming up with the idea of him and Beth moving. Beth’s best friend that is pregnant moves in with Beth and Alex. As you can imagine Alex isn’t happy.
Rick, lives in a flat, with a flatmate Rollo. Rick is in love with another man’s wife, Marina who lives in Silver Vale. Marina has kept quite about her secrets that have been revealed to Rick one by one but of course Rick doesn’t like what Marina is telling him.
To me Rick is a totally weird, spying on Marina and doing things to find out more about Marina on his own, and I actually think he’s a bit jealous, of Marina. Rick even gets his friend Rollo involved with spying on Marina’s luxury house.
It’s all Ricks fault as Rollo’s life takes a turn for the worst from helping Rick with his girlfriend Marina. I personally didn’t like the sound of Alex as he seems shifty about the nature trail opening. Then when I started reading about Rick, I didn’t warm to him either, with his controlling jealousy behaviour.
Louise Candlish hit all the right buttons for me throughout this book, with all the twists and turns, keeping me glued to every single word every sentence and every chapter.
If The Only Suspect was turned into a TV series it would have to be a must watch.
For thriller fans, as a matter of urgency, I recommend you put The Only Suspect by Louise Candlish as the next book to read.
About Louise Candlish

A bit about me: I live in a South London neighbourhood not unlike the one in my books, with my husband, teenage daughter (when she’s not at uni), and a fox-red Labrador called Bertie who is the apple of my eye. Books, TV and long walks are my passions – oh, and drinking wine in the sun with family and friends. My favourite authors include Tom Wolfe, Patricia Highsmith, Barbara Vine and Agatha Christie.
