I’ve ——-, of course. Everyone——-. They’re lying if they say they don’t, but——- doesn’t count, obviously. You can’t lose your virginity to yourself.

You know, the way teenager guys talk about sex, you’d think all of us were having it all the time, non-stop.

Friendship, masculinity, sex is it different for boys who like boys? Ant Stevenson has a lot of questions but he doesn’t know where to look for answers. But he is determined to figure it out, all while balancing his ever-changing friendships with three very different boys.

MY REVIEW

This is a special fiction book for boys between the ages of 13 to 14+.

This book is a modern day short novel that would ideally be for boys. Boys will be boys and this story Patrick Ness has the exact way boys talk to each other.

A friendship story where boys discuss everything openly about being a virgin, swearing, smoking, talking about sex and girls, and a boy coming out being gay. I strongly believe that’s it’s ok for boys to come out.

The boys Charlie, Freddie, and Jack Taylor used to be inseparable through primary school But when they went to a Boys school they went Jack went his own way. This is a brilliant story with scenes in school with twists gearing up.

I love the words

Gently so as not bump my nose or eye, he presses his lips to mine. And for a second, for a minute, for ever, every nerve in my body is right there, right at the point where we’re touching. And boom, I think. That’s it.

The illustrations are amazing in black and white, that reflect just how boys dress in headphones, a hoodie. Boys and Girls will love this book.

What has been said about this amazing book

Different For Boys by Patrick Ness explores teen sexuality, friendship, and romance in this frank and humorous LGBTQ+ story about Ant who is finding all his relationships increasing complicated.

Emma Saunders – Books of 2023, BBC Entertainment & Arts

Hormones crackle in this coming-out story… Broken rules and pushed boundaries abound in this punchy postmodern satire… Not content with merely writing a moving coming-out story, he has also constructed a postmodern satire of the limitations of the young adult novel… The hormones are crackling and the dynamics within the group twist and turn as they explore their sexuality. The denouement, while not unexpected, is written with freshness and feeling. Ness is perceptive, plots beautifully and writes like a dream.

Tender and pitch-perfect, from one of the best YA authors around.
