At the centre of a tiny community in a remote village just inland from the Aberdeenshire coast stands an unexpected lighthouse. Built two centuries ago by an eccentric landowner, it has become home to the only bookshop for miles around.

Rachel is an incomer to the village. She arrived five years ago and found a place she could call home. So when the owner of the Lighthouse Bookshop dies suddenly, she steps in to take care of the place, trying to help it survive the next stage of its life.

But when she discovers a secret in the lighthouse, long kept hidden, she realises there is more to the history of the place than she could ever imagined. Can she uncover the truth about the lighthouse’s first owner? And can she protect the secret history of the place?

MY REVIEW

As a book lover I wanted to read The Lighthouse Bookshop because I loved the sound of a bookshop in a lighthouse. How amazing is that? I wish there was a bookshop inside a lighthouse near me! That’s what made this story special with this lovely fictional idea by author Sharon Gosling. I did find this story quite heartbreaking as I have a friend right now in hospital from heart failure.

A lighthouse far from the sea, a tight-knit group of friends and a bookshop at the hear of it all!,

Rachel arrived in a tiny place in Newton Dunbar, Aberdeenshire, five years ago, working in Cullen’s lighthouse bookshop.

Cullen is taken to hospital where he sadly dies of a heart attack, but his last ‘Wanted… words was wanted to keep the bookshop…’

The next morning after the owner Cullen passed away, Rachel opened the lighthouse bookshop. Cullen made a Will before he took ownership of the estate. He had inherited what was left of the MacDonalds estate when he was only a child. Cullen’s father sadly dude when he was only ten years old. But Cullen has no children for the estate to be passed to. The solicitor is investigating to see if any natural heir can be found and if no one can be found the estate will go to the Crown.

As The lighthouse bookshop is Rachel’s home and her life, the solicitor is very kindly going to give Rachel first refusal to buy it. But Rachel can’t afford to buy the lighthouse.

This is a touching story, that I was glued to to see if there was a way Rachel could buy the lighthouse with the bookshop. This book is full of secret passion and long ago loves. The Lighthouse Bookshop is a novel of community, friendship and the power of a good book.

I found this book an absolutely pleasure to read and I hope you all will too.
