Darkness protects, sounds betray. He’s getting closer. Twigs snap. There are panting breaths right behind her. Her own lungs fight for air. She feels along the ground. A fallen branch and a loose stone. Your last chance, little hare. Then you’re dead.”

The untapped natural resources of Sweden’s far north are sparking a gold rush, with the criminal underworld leading the charge. But it’s not the prospect of riches that bring Lisbeth Salander to the small town of Gassak. Her niece’s mother is the latest woman in the region to have vanished without trace. Two things soon become clear Savla is a remarkably gifted teenager and she is being watched.

Journalist Mikael Blomkvist is also heading north. He has seen better days. Millennium magazine is in its final print issue, and relations with his daughter are strained. Worse still, there are troubling rumours surrounding the man she’s about to marry. When the truth behind the whispers explodes into violence, Slander emerges as Blomkvist’s last hope.

This new thriller from Karin Smirnoff will submerge you into a world of conspiracy and betrayal, old enemies and new friends, snow-bound wilderness and corporate greed. Lisbeth Salander is back.

A little of my favourite chapter from page 33

You slept with him?” asks Svala in the car on the way back to Gasska.

None of your business.”

“He has a wife.”

“That’s his problem.”

They sit mutely all the way to the border crossing between Tornea and Haparanda.

Did you girls see the Northern Lights? says Lisbeth, to relieve the silence.

Karin Smirnoff (b. 1964) lives in the small village of Yttre Hertsånger, in northern Sweden. She worked as a journalist before she decided to change direction and bought a wooden factory. The following year Smirnoff returned with My Mother and in 2020 she ended the trilogy about Jana Kippo with Then I Went Home Smirnoff brought something entirely new into the literary field with her immensely appreciated trilogy that has sold more than 500 000 copies in Sweden.
