Maddy Yip’s Guide to Life Sue Cheung Book Review

MADDY YIP’S GUIDE TO LIFE BY SUE CHEUNG

Paperback published by Andersen Press 5th August 2021

Maddy Yip is perfectly happy in life, until she realises that everyone she knows has a talent – except for her! Maddy is determined to change that, with the help of her brothers, bewildered grandad and her best friend Dev. There are disastrous attempts at breakdancing and playing the recorder, revolting cakes, and a magic disappearing trick that ends up with an escaped guinea pig. Will Maddy ever find her true calling?

My name is Maddy Yip. I live with my two annoying brothers, mum, dad and Agung ( my Chinese grandad ). My BEZZIE, Dev, lives two doors down. GUESS WHAT? Everyone has a talent except for ME! So now I’m going to find my life calling – even if it means rubbish recorder-playing, bad breakdancing, worse baking, and losing the school guinea pig along the way. Surely I’m good at something other than ARMPIT FARTS?

My Review

Maddy Yip’s Guide To Life is hilarious, with fun pictures throughout the story, for age 8 to 11 year olds. The book is a winner of the Diverse Book Award.

Maddy’s mum looks after her friends twins Ted and Tod who are very naughty. Maddy has nicked named them Evil Twins. Maddy has a friend Dev who is her best mate. Maddy and Dev first bonded at infant school. I burst out laughing at what Maddy says about her fourteen year old brother.

In Maddy Yip’s life is her bezzie friend, and doughnuts that are essential .

I did feel sorry for Maddy as she is rather sad with not being good at anything as everyone is her family have something in the trophy cabinet besides her. It gets even more sad as Maddy is beginning to feel a total loser.

Dev her best friend is asking Maddy questions for his research he asks Maddy if she is psychic, Maddy replies well if I was, I’d know what my flippin talent was, wouldn’t I?

Everyone has a talent for something and I was hooked into this story wondering if Maddy will find her special talent.

Children age from 7+ will love this story all about Maddy Yip and with all the funny brilliant illustrations. This story shows that young children don’t need to have a trophy to be good at something.

I would like to thank Walker Books and Andersen Press for very kindly sending me this paperback to read and review.
